A fair number of the Marvel Masterworks collections are on sale in Kindle format at Amazon.com for 99 cents.  We don’t know how long this sale will last, so we recommend grabbing them while you can.  Here are a few of the highlights we have seen so far:

Golden Age Marvel Comics Masterworks Vol. 1: Marvel Mystery Comics

In September 1939, a new title hit newsstands and changed the comic-book world forever: MARVEL COMICS #1 had arrived! And this comic wasn’t your typical assortment of super-powered, straight-laced do-gooders. This was something completely new. The Human Torch, the creation of Dr. Phineas Horton, was neither man nor hero. He was a fiery force of nature who shocked and unsettled mankind. The half-human/half-Atlantean Sub-Mariner ventured from his undersea kingdom not with a mind set on peace, but bent toward vengeance! They’re flanked by an eclectic set born out of the energy and imagination of the Golden Age – including the heroic Angel, robot invention Electro, hard-edged detective the Ferret, cowboy Masked Raider and jungle adventurer Ka-Zar. (Collects Marvel Comics #1 and Marvel Mystery Comics #2-4)

Captain Marvel Masterworks Vol. 1

Look out! Captain Marvel, the space-born super hero, is coming at you with scintillating super-hero sci-fi adventures! Branded a traitor by the vicious Colonel Yon-Rogg for defending the people of Earth, Kree Captain Mar-Vell assumes the human identity of Walter Lawson and becomes our planet’s protector against an awesome array of interstellar enemies. The massive Sentry #459, the savage Super-Skrull, Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner and Quasimodo the Living Computer all wage war against Captain Marvel here in his first adventures. Of course there’s plenty of drama, too, with the lovely Medic Una and Carol Danvers each catching the Kree Captain’s eye. Crafted by top talents of the Marvel Age, this one’s certifiably out of this world! (Collects Marvel Super-Heroes (1967) #12-13 and Captain Marvel (1968) #1-9)

Populated by dinosaurs, barbarians and saber-tooth tigers, this land that time forgot is threatened from beyond its borders by enemies including Kraven the Hunter and madmen still fighting World War II – and from within, by the bizarre Garokk the Petrified Man and the sun-priestess Zaladane.
